The Texas / American Battle Flag was the inspiration of two ten-year-old boys. The old flags have yet another story to tell. The flags are bonded with a Texas Oath “Texans Take Care of America” because we have been doing it for years and years.
We debuted this flag at the Taylor, Texas Christmas Parade on December 6, 2003. One week later, on December 13, 2003, the 4th Infantry pulled Saddam from the “Spider Hole.” Some bystander at the parade who had seen the flag notified the 4th Infantry. They sent word back that they wanted this flag.

About three weeks later, I was given a phone number to Langley, Virginia, which had Internet service to Iraq. Allowing for time difference, I called the number at 9:45 p.m. A Sergeant (SFT) answered the phone and I began explaining the call, and questioned if I was talking too fast. I thought he was entering every word of this conversation on the Internet. I continued asking questions about a certain Lieutenant Colonel (LTC). The SGT stated he worked with him. I then said, “are you in Langley, Virginia?” He said, “No, I am in Tikrit, Iraq.” Then I was really worried; how much would a call to Tikrit, Iraq cost? It turned out 20 cents.
The Lieutenant Colonel and a Major, who has his PHD from Texas A&M, sent many e-mails to us. The Taylor, Thrall students and many other teens sent them treats. We found Valentine Candy Hearts that said, “You’re my Hero.”
The Major returned from Tikrit, Iraq and made a trip to Taylor. He told us a wild and crazy story, which never made the news. When they pulled Saddam out of the “spider hole,” he came out spitting on the soldiers. Meanwhile our soldiers were in a mortar attack with no place to secure Saddam. The 4th Infantry had one small two-seat helicopter on the ground near the site. The LTC put out a request for a bigger helicopter in code about the cargo. Within many miles, they had several US Helicopter pilots respond. As I said, mortar assault was critical. There was no place to put Saddam, and most likely the enemy knew whom they had. One of the 4th Infantry soldiers handcuffed Saddam. The Soldiers were trying to figure out how to secure Saddam where he couldn’t escape. One of our men jumped up and duck taped Saddam to the small helicopter’s skid until the other larger helicopter came in. Well, Saddam didn’t run off or get rescued.
It appears many celebrities, i.e. David Letterman, etc., have been to the palace, including President Bush, Texas Governor Perry, country and western singers and many more famous people. We received a picture from Washington, D.C. of the Texas / American Battle Flag, which was taken in front of the White House in November 2004. A copy of this flag is now at Disney World, Orlando, Florida.
